CURIOSITY WITH GRAVE CONSEQUENCES

Da'an was standing at his window in the embassy, which allowed a beautiful view of the city. But he wasn't really looking outside as he was lost in thoughts. The happenings of the previous days entered his mind as soon as he was without distraction by his duties. The feelings and images Zo'or had shared with him......this strange feeling of power when Zo'or had killed the man.......Da'an wasn't able to focus on anything else. He wasn't enjoying this feelings, but still they made him curious. It was two days after the day Zo'or had transferred his life force into the human body the last time, two days after he had shared his experiences with Da'an and two days of thinking and trying to understand them, when Da'an had finally reached his decision.

Da'an stepped back from the window and walked to his chair. With a movement of his arm he opened a channel and told Major Kincaid that he would be busy for a while and that he would contact him as soon as the presence of his protector would be required. Major Kincaid simply nodded his agreement and added a “Yes, Da'an.” Da'an recognized that Liam was in Renee Palmers office, but that didn't really surprise him. After his advise for Major Kincaid he slowly walked out of his office and made his way to the portals, which brought him to the mothership.

He entered a room with some machines in it. It was the same room, where Zo'or had transferred his mind into the human body. “Agent Sandoval.” the Taelon greeted the human who was already waiting in the room. “Is everything ready for the transfer?” Sandoval nodded, but then said with a voice that showed concern. “Are you sure that you want to do this? You know what happened to Zo'or.....this is very dangerous....you are too vulnerable in this human body.” Da'an smiled and sat down on the chair. “There is no reason for you to be concerned, Agent Sandoval. I have no intention in visiting the kind of place, like Zo'or did. I will be very careful.” Sandoval looked at the Taelon for a moment and then activated the machine. “As you wish Da'an.” Now Da'an began to glow and his energy started floating into the human body. Soon Da'an's appearance, that was still sitting in the chair, seemed lifeless, while the eyes of the human suddenly opened.

Da'an sat up slowly, watching his ‘new’ body with disbelief. He started moving his hands, his arms and watched them with great interest, as he did with the rest of his body. Sandoval cleared his throat to draw the attention of the Taelon to the cloth he was holding in his hands. “Thank you, Agent Sandoval.” Da'an said in a voice that was close to his usual, but still different. He slowly dressed himself with that look of curiosity in his eyes. Then he smiled at the Agent again. “I believe that I am ready to go.” he said while already walking towards the portal. Before he could enter it he heard Sandoval's voice “Da'an?” He turned around and looked at the human “Yes, Agent Sandoval?” - “Please be careful. You know the case is different to Zo'or's. He choose a male body, while you are in a female body. Don't you think that I should stay in your reach if something unexpected happens?” The concerned tone was in his voice again. Da'an simply smiled. “I don't think that this will be necessary. I will contact you by global when your presence is required.” Sandoval sighed lightly “Yes, Da'an, as you wish.” When Da'an had passed the portal Sandoval waited a while and got out his global. He had placed a position finder in the bag Da'an carried, so that he would always know the destination of the taelon and could easily follow and observe him.

Following the taelon was easier than expected. Sandoval had sent two of his men, who followed Da'an slowly by car, or covered as guests of the bars he visited. Da'an had been walking around for a while and finally decided to visit a bar that was called “Flat Planet Cafe”. He sat down at a table and soon a woman, dressed in colourful cloth came to his table. “Hi! What do you want to drink?” Da'an smiled at her friendly and remembered that he was now able to experience what the humans called eating and drinking. He looked at the card that was lying on the table. “A..coke....please” - “Of course,” the waitress said and walked to the bar. Da'an watched her, until she came back with a glass, full of this sparkling fluid. After he had paid for the drink, he softly touched it. It was feeling.......how was it feeling? He had never experienced anything like this before. It was so different to touch something with the human hands, with its skin. He grabbed the glass and held it up to his mouth. He had watched how the humans drank before, but to do it himself was completely different.......he took a little sip and kept it in his mouth to feel the taste of what the humans called coke. It was fascinating to feel the sparkling on his tongue and he waited until it stopped, before he swallowed it. It flow down coldly his oesophagus. He was overjoyed by this and couldn't believe Zo'or had never tried this when he was in the human body. He decided to share this with Zo'or as soon as he returned into his energetic form.

Da'an was still smiling at his coke, when he recognized a familiar face at the bar. Wasn't this Major Kincaid, who was talking to the VERY colourful dressed man behind the bar? And with them was a blonde lady, wearing leather cloth.....Renee Palmer. Interesting how different some humans dressed when they had their free time. The lady said a farewell greeting to the colourful man ( who seemed to be Augur) and walked towards the exit. Liam went right behind her, glancing at all the women in the bar. Seeing the woman that was still smiling and following him with her look, he smiled back at her, before he leaved the bar.....

Da'an stayed in the bar for one more hour until he left and headed for the park. There he walked, though it was already dark, to a bank and sat down to watch his surroundings for a while. His two followers were nearly bored, so easy was it to observe him. One of them was sitting in a car near the entry of the park, and the other one was pretending to take a walk in the park.

There were hardly any people in the park, except for a young couple and a man walking his dog. When it got colder the couple and some minutes later the man went out of the park. There was no one except for Da'an and his observers. That was when Da'an stood up to walk towards the street again. Suddenly a man crossed his way, grabbed Da'ans bag and tried to run away with it. But Da'an simple stared at him and refused to let him go with it. The robber placed something he was holding in his hand - a electroshocker - against Da'ans chest and activated it. Da'an fell down within a second and the man ran away with the bag. Da'ans observer saw what had happened and ran after the robber who headed for the exit of the park. He draw his weapon. “Stop!” he shouted. The robber turned around and looked at him...then he suddenly draw his own gun. Now the two men were facing each other. One shot and the other felt down to the ground. The robber shouted “You own fault, you fool!” and went on running. The other observer had heard the shot and saw the position finder of Da'an running towards the exit of the park. He jumped out of the car and ran to where the signal was and collided with the robber. He grabbed him to hold him, but the robber shot him and then ran away.

The young woman awoke lying on wet grass. Her head and chest were hurting and she felt very weak. Where was she? What had happened? Irritated she stood up and walked staggering towards the street. Crossing it she nearly ran into a car. “You idiot!” the driver shouted angrily, but all she did was staring at him. That draw the attention of a man, who was walking across the street, at her. “Are you all right?” She simply looked at him with wide eyes, but didn't say anything. “Miss?” he tried again. Still no answer. Now he looked at her with concern. Then he saw her shivering “You shouldn't walk around here alone at night....and it is too cold for you in this light cloth,” he said looking at her dress. “I know a bar not far from here where you could have a hot drink.” She nodded slowly but did not say a word. “Okay then, follow me.” On the way to the bar she kept quiet and only nodded or shook her head when she was asked a question by the man, who introduced himself as Major Liam Kincaid.

“Okay, here we are” he said when they entered. “Here, have seat, I am getting you something to drink.” She sat down and watched the man coming back with a cup of coffee. “Thank you.” she whispered. He smiled at her. “The first time I hear your voice.....You have been in this bar a few hours ago, haven't you?” She took a sip from the warm drink. “Possible.” - “Why possible?” She hesitated before answering his question “Because....I don't remember......I....I don't know.” Now she was stumbling and her hand began to shiver. “You don't know? How..?” Liam stopped when he saw that her eyes filled with tears. “I thought that I was simply confused when I woke up....but now....I thought that.....” her voice broke and she had to clear her throat before going on “I can't remember anything....not even my name......my NAME......I don't know who I AM!” Liam recognized that the people started staring at them. “Maybe we should go to a more quiet place than here. Come with me.” he gestured her to follow and they made their way to Liams Loft.

“I believe that your memory will return soon. Maybe you should rest for a while.” he said, when she had stopped crying quietly. She shook her head lightly. “No. I don't want to sleep.” Then her expression suddenly changed. “I....I think I know you.....you seem so familiar...” Liam smiled. “Well, you might have seen me on TV. I am Da'ans Protector.” - “Da'an?” - “The North-American Companion. A Taelon” - “A Taelon?” Liam sighed. “Well how can I explain what a taelon is....? They are beings from another world and came to earth years ago.” - “Oh.” She looked at him with her confused look. “Maybe I should follow your advise and sleep. Hoping that tomorrow everything is back to normal.” Liam nodded and offered her his bed, while he would take the sofa.

Sandoval was staring at his global. “They are dead? And the woman is missing? Where is the signal? Follow it!” - “That's what we are doing right now, but we made no efforts so far.” Sandoval wanted to answer, but was interrupted. “Is there a problem, Agent Sandoval?” Zo'or watched him with interested. His protector closed the global and looked at him without showing any emotions. “No, Zo'or. Only of private nature.” The Taelon studied the human for a while, but then said “I hope you will be able to solve it. But please use your private time for your private problems.” and walked back to his chair. Sandoval said “Yes, of course Zo'or.” and returned to his work.

The young woman opened her eyes. This place was not familiar to her. But then she recalled the last evening. But also she recalled that she had lost her memory and realized that it had not returned ‘over night’ as she had hoped. She went slowly out of the bed, still dressed in the cloth she had been wearing yesterday. Though her memory was still missing, her mind was clearer now. She walked out of the room and saw that Liam was already awake and having breakfast. The first moment he didn't recognized her and she simply watched him. She had the feeling to know him. And not just from TV. That knowledge was deeper, though she couldn't tell in which way. She cleared her throat and Liam turned around. “Oh, you are awake I see,” he smiled at her, “is, em..” She interrupted him: “No, it has not returned....” He looked sorry for her, but still kept his smiling surface. “Do you want anything to eat? Sit down, I'll get you something.” he gestured at the table and stood up to let her sit. When he returned they ate quietly. Liam was the one to break the silence. “Listen. I have a friend who could help you to find out who you are, because he has access to... well lets just say that it would be no problem for him.” he looked at the woman and waited for her reply. “Really? Oh, thank you. When could we do that?” Liam looked at his watch “In about 6 hours this will be possible. I have contacted him already and he said he would return soon.”

“Is there something in your mind you would like to share?” Liam asked and as reply received the surprised look of the young woman. He smiled “You are staring at me all the time.” - “Oh I am sorry.....it is just.....well I already told you that you look familiar to me. And I can't get rid of this feeling. To the opposite. From minute to minute I am more and more convinced to know you. You are sure we have not met yet?” - “Yes, I am quite sure. Maybe you are recalling last night when you saw me in the cafe?” he tried to find an answer. She nodded slowly “Yes, maybe....” She was calm again and looked down at her feet. Her despair had returned and she felt how her eyes filled with tears again. Then she felt a hand touching her shoulder. Liam was kneeling in front of her. “It's all right.” he said softly. Her voice was shaking when she answered “What if my memory will never return?” Now she couldn't hold the tears anymore. Liam hugged her. “Don't say that. It will return.” She was feeling so comfortable being held in his arms. So secure and save. There was this familiarity again. Liam was stroking her hair, when they looked each other into the eyes. Their mouths came closer and he kissed her lightly. She was surprised at first but then answered his kiss. It was as if time had come to a standstill and she was enjoying it. For a moment she forgot about all her trouble.

“Beep-Beep” Liams Global was trying to get attention. “Sorry” he whispered to the woman and opened it. “Augur....” his face showed that Liam was not happy to see him. Augur smiled at him “Oh I'm sorry. I hope I didn't disturb you somehow.” Still this smile. “No,” Liam groaned angrily. “Well, anyway, I wanted to tell you that I can search for the identity of your friend now. Just give her the global and I can scan her face.” Liam handed her the global. She looked at Augur. Did she know this man? “Okay, done. I will give this information to the computer and......wait.....” his face was gone from the screen for a moment. Then it returned. This time the smile was gone. “Well, I found the identity of your friend.....but you won't like this. I send the info to your global, Liam” Liam took the global and studied the information beneath the picture that was obviously the image of the woman standing next to him. He read out loud what he saw “Jessica Ericcson, 22 years.....hm......became a member of the volunteer corps with the age of 19.....shuttle pilot......excellent talent.......” then he stopped. The woman could not see what he was reading “What's wrong?” she asked confused. Liam didn't answer and stared at Augur instead. “This must be wrong, Augur. Search again!” Augur shook his head “It IS right, Liam.” Liam turned his head to the woman, whose name seemed to be Jessica. “What is wrong Liam? Tell me!” in her voice was a light sound of panic. When he didn't answer she grabbed the global. Then she looked at Liam. “Deceased?” Liam nodded. She laughed out of panic “Well, see I am standing here, so this can't be right, okay?” Liam grabbed her shoulders. “Calm down. Of course that is not true. And I will find out what has happened, okay? Remember, I work for the taelons and I WILL find out what this file means. But therefor I will have to fly to the mothership. The best is that you wait here until I came back. Will you do that?” She nodded. “Here is my global number. Call me if there is any trouble.” He walked towards the door, when she stopped him. “Liam?” - “Yes?” - “Thank you.....for everything.” He smiled at her and gave her a kiss on the cheek. She smiled back and drew him closer to kiss him back. This time not only on the cheek. “I need to go now....bye” he said with a grin and left the room.

Agent Sandoval was on his way to the bridge, when he saw Liam standing at a screen and looking up some information. “Major?” he said and Liam deactivated the screen so fast as if Sandoval had caught him doing something forbidden. Sandoval looked at him suspicious. “What are you doing here?” Before Liam could answer Sandovals Global beeped. “Well, em, go on with your work.” he said fast and walked away to answer to his global. Liam sighed released and went on searching for information on Jessica Ericcson.

When he was far enough from Liam, Sandoval opened the global “Yes?” It was one of the men involved in the search for the missing woman. “Agent Sandoval, we have found the signal. It was with the murderer! Now we have caught him.” Sandovals expression didn't show any sign of being pleased by this result. “Where is the woman?” he asked in a sharp tone. “We haven't found her yet...” - “Then go on. NOW!” he gave his order and closed the global with more power than needed. He remained like this for a while, staring at the wall. Suddenly he turned around and walked to the terminal where Liam had been a few minutes ago. His fingers flew over the screen “Lets see what you were looking for, Major.” The image changed and a file appeared. Sandovals eyes widened when he saw Jessica Ericcson's picture. The woman he was searching for...the one who was carrying Da'an's life force.

Jessica walk through the room when a flash of images entered her mind again. A man talking to her. What he said she couldn't understand. A strange room, a light noise in the background. It seemed pulsing somehow. Then the memory was gone. This had happened a few times since Liam had left. Her head was hurting. When she had tried to call Liam no one had answered. Now she tried again. Still nothing. “I can't wait anymore. I need some fresh air.” she said to herself, wrote a message for Liam and left the loft.

“This is better.” she sighed and enjoyed the walk in the small park. She would return as soon as her head felt better, but for now she sat down on a bank next to a little lake, where some ducks where picking up pieces of bread, and closed her eyes to relax.

“Agent Sandoval” Zo'or was standing right behind Sandoval, who had been working at one of the terminals on the bridge. Sandoval turned around. “Yes?” - “I tried to contact Da'an at the embassy but I was told that he has not been there since yesterday evening. Now I wonder if you know where he is?” Sandoval remained cool “I don't know Zo'or.” - “And where is Major Kincaid?” Zo'or asked. “I have seen him on the mothership. Do you want me to contact him?” Zo'or hesitated before he answered to Sandoval's question. “No, I don't think this is necessary.” With this words he turned around and walked back to his chair.

Though Zo'or had not given him the order, Sandoval did some researches himself. Liam was still on the mothership and downloading some data about the volunteer corps Jessica Ericcson was assigned to when she had been a volunteer. When Sandoval had a look at the destination where Da'an had been seen last and Liams Home address he saw something that made him grimace. The two destination where just 1km apart from each other. Sandoval gave Zo'or some excuse that made it possible for him to take a break of one hour and then quickly headed for the ID-Portal.

The first place he went to was the park where the accident had happened. He walked through it fast, glancing at his pocket watch from time to time. Then he stopped and stared at a woman who was relaxing on a bank near the small lake.

Someone was standing in her sun. Jessica opened her eyes and blinked. She could hardly see him as the bright sunlight behind him gave her the feeling to get blind. But still she could see that he was staring at her. She raised her hand and held it up at her forehead to shield her eyes against the sun. Now she could see him clearer. “What are you doing HERE?” the man said and walked closer to her. “Who are you?” she asked confused and stood up. Then images entered her mind again and she groaned holding her head. A image including this man. “Do I know you?” she asked him and walked even closer than they were already standing. The face of the man looked now more confused than she was herself. She touched his cheek with her hand. A new flash of images entered her head. Her hand remained where it was and the man stared at her. “Da'an?” he asked, obviously concerned. “Da'an? Who is this?” she still didn't move. “Oh no, what has happened?” Sandoval said more to himself than to the woman standing in front of him. Then he grabbed the hand which was touching his face. “You have to come with me now, Da'an.” he told her. “What? I don't understand......? No, I have to go back to Liam. He is waiting for me. I...I....” the new flash of memory stopped her from going on. She suddenly knew the name of the man in front of her. “Ronald Sandoval? Is this your name?” she said wavering. He smiled released. “Yes!” She couldn't remember who he was but somehow felt that it was all right to follow him.

On their way to the next portal she still held his hand tight, while he was asking her out about every detail of what had happened the last hours. From time to time the flashes came back and they had to stop and wait until it was over. By the time they had reached the portal she had told him everything - nearly everything. Sandoval looked at the portal in front of them. “I think that the robbery has caused your lack of memory. I have no idea how, but I hope that as soon as you will get out of this body it will return.” Her mouth dropped open “Out of what? What are you talking about?” Sandoval stepped beside her and activated the portal. “You will understand.” he said before they disappeared.

Seconds later she found herself in a strange room. “I...I know that place....it is...the...mothership?” She stammered and gave Sandoval a questioning look. He nodded and gestured her to lie down on this strange machine in the middle of the room. When she hesitated he said “Trust me” and she lay down slowly. Sandoval walked around the machine and activated it. When it began working she felt as if her conscience was somehow pulled out of her body. Then suddenly a huge wave of memories seemed to crash her mind. For a moment she was unable to do anything. Her mind was trying to understand the memories, to bring them into the right order again. Then it was kind of dark around her.

“Da'an? Are you all right?” Da'an opened his eyes and saw Sandoval standing next to him and watching him concerned. “I....not really.” - “Is your memory...?” - “Yes, it is. Thanks to you, Agent Sandoval.” he tried to smile, but he was still too shocked and confused. Sandoval helped him getting up from the chair. He staggered towards the portal. “What are you doing, Da'an? Where are you going?” - “I need to rest after this...experience.” Sandoval nodded and watched Da'an entering the portal.

THE END
